FHS coaching staff takes shape
Franklin will have a pretty much a new look to its coaching staff this season.
Eight assistant coaches got the OK from the school board, and another is expected to be approved later, new coach Tom Haynes said.
Rounding out Haynes' staff are:
Brian Olson -- assistant head coach. Olson previously worked under Haynes at Cochranton, serving as defensive coordinator and strength and conditioning coach. He also has a long history as a track and field coach at Brookville High School, Allegheny College and in Florida.
Bill Keely -- assistant coach. He serves as Franklin's track coach and was an assistant football coach at Oil City.
Zack O'Brien -- assistant coach. He's the lone holdover from last year's staff. He also is an assistant swimming coach at FHS.
Blane Gold -- jayvee coach. He's been an assistant coach for the last two years at Oil City. He's a former Franklin and Grove City College player and is an assistant baseball coach at Rocky Grove.
Joe Katavich -- offensive line coach and jayvee assistant. A Franklin resident and a state trooper. He developed the youth football program at Lakeview.
Joe Marsteller -- 9th grade coach. A Franklin graduate, Marsteller is a former assistant coach at Meadville. Haynes called him "a very positive motivator" who wanted to return to Franklin to coach.
Tom Wisner -- 9th grade assistant. Another Franklin guy whose brother Michael will be a junior lineman for the Franklin varsity this fall.
Kreig Spahn -- middle school head coach. He's a former long-time assistant at Cochranton. He played at Kenyon College and was an all-state high school running back and linebacker in Ohio. He's also a doctor with Northwest Physicians Associates in Cochranton and Franklin.
A middle school assistant has yet to be approved by the board.

Franklin names new coach
By Ed Brannon
The News-Herald
A new chapter in Franklin football history became official Jan. 28 when the school board approved the hiring of Tom Haynes as the Knights' new head coach.
He replaces Dave Smith, who resigned after the 2012 season after nine years as head coach.
Haynes spent 16 years as Cochranton's head coach before taking last season off to
spend more time with his family. His decision to return to thre sidelines wasn't exactly his idea.
"I thought spending time with my family was a good thing, but they all told me that I needed to get back into coaching," he said. "I guess I never really lost my enthusiasm for the game, and I missed being away from the daily interaction with a team."
Haynes is eager to turn around the Knights' fortunes, which saw them go 5-35 over the past four years.
“One of my main goals is to get back that Franklin pride and restore the program to what is was not that long ago,” said Haynes, who led the Cardinals to their only league championship back in 2003. “When we had things going at Cochranton, Franklin had things going as well. I remember a guy named Richie Cerro who was doing great things.”
One of the biggest obstacles facing Haynes is the declining number of players going out for football at Franklin.
“First and foremost, that’s my main focus,” he said. “I want to find out why the numbers are down. I know Franklin has a ton of athletes and that excites me. I hope my love for the game comes across to some of these kids.”
Haynes is no stranger to the Franklin area since all of his children have swam competitively for years at the Franklin YMCA.
“I’m in Franklin every day dropping off my kids at the YMCA,” he said. “Now, after I drop them off, I plan on going to the high school and get to know these kids.”
Although he hasn’t filled out his coaching staff as yet, Haynes is bringing a valued assistant with him from Cochranton.
“Brian Olsen was my defensive coordinator and is one of the best strength and conditioning guys around,” he said. “He’s invaluable to what we hope to accomplish here. Attitude is all about toughness, and Brian and I are big into strength training.
That’s what we created at Cochranton. We took kids to weightlifting competitions all over the state. If you make it fun, the kids will come.”
Stepping up to Class AAA after spending so many years at the Class A level also has Haynes excited.
“Going up a couple of classes is a challenge, but one that I’m ready for,” he said. “My goal is to build this program into a perennial contender and it can be done with plenty of hard work.”

Matthews recognized by PFN
Franklin senior linebacker Christopher "Dalton" Matthews received an honorable mention on the Pennsylvania Football News Class AAA all-state team announced Jan. 1
The 5-9, 170-pounder led the Knights in tackles with 81 (34 solo) and defensive points with 183 in nine games.
He also led the Knights in tackles last season with 68.
Matthews was a tweo-time All-Region 5 selection, making the first team this year and the second team in 2010.
He received the coveted Half-Helmet Award at the team banquet in December, an honor also won by his dad, Chris, in 1990.

Smith steps down as FHS coach
Dave Smith resigned as Franklin football coach Dec. 12 after the school board decided to open the position.
"I was told they felt a change was needed and were going to open up the position, which is understandable given that we haven't had a lot of success the past four years," Smith told Ed Brannon of The News-Herald.
"I'm disappointed because I feel that we've got a group of
underclassmen coming up who seem to be buying into the system. But I understand the board's decision and I have no hard feelings. They have to make tough decisions all the time.
Smith has been coach nine seasons, posting a 31-59 record, including a 5-35 mark the last four years.
"We've had some real struggles the past four years, not only with our numbers, but in the players' comminment to winning," Smith said. "You get caught in the middle when you're struggling. On the one had, you need numbers to get you out of that rut, but kids aren't as willing to come out when you're struggling."
Franklin's numbers were so low this past season that it didn't field a jayvee team.
Smith said Franklin's record the last four years is not a reflection on the players. "...because of decreasing numbers, we just couldn't put it all together and get over the hump."
Smith is confident that the next coach will have some good material to work with. "...I really felt like we were about to his an up cycle in the near future," he said.
Smith is a Franklin graduate who made all-star teams in high school. He was an All-PSAC defensive end at Edinboro and a member of the school's all-time team.
He is unsure about future plans, adding "I don't know what's in store. I've thought about coaching at the college level, but for now, I'll just go with the flow."
