Former Franklin High School athletic director Wayne Eakin died Tuesday, Aug. 19, 2003. He was 79.
Eakin was a 1942 FHS graduate. He graduated from Slippery Rock in 1950 and earned masters degrees from Slippery Rock in 1967 and Westminster in 1978.
His teaching and coaching career at FHS spanned 36 years, from 1950-86, when he retired as vice principal. He taught geography and physcial education at Franklin.
He was backfield coach of the undefeated 1959 football team, and head coach of the track team that won the District 10 title in 1960. He also coached baskeball at FHS.
The annual Wayne C. Eakin Strength of Character Award is given annually to a boy and girl athlete at FHS.
He played in the Hayrake League (baseball) and was involved in boxing and tennnis in his early years.
