Game recaps
Nov. 2 -- Knights 35, Corry 28
Junior Sean Cogswell rushed for a career-high 186
yards on 25 carries and scored three touchdowns, leading the Knights to a 35-28 come-from-behind victory in their season-finale.
Cogswell scored the Knights' first two TDs on runs on 41 and 5 yards, and the last from 13 yards out. Seven of his carriers went for 10 yards or more. Cogswell also caught two passes for 17 yards, and intercepted a pass.
Trailing 28-21, the Knights scored twice in a four-minute span to pull out their fourth win of the season, and snap a two-game losing streak.
A 15-yard pass from Julian Wested to Tyler Bittner closed the gap to 28-27, but the two-point conversion failed. The TD pass was the 19th of the season for Wested, tying the school record Partrick Kahle set in 2004.

After the Knights defense stopped the Beavers at midfield, the drove for the winning score with 4:41 left. Sophomore Steven Myers passed to Bittner for the PAT.
Bittner, meanwhile, had 11 catches for 107 yards, including a 25-yard reception that set up a 1-yard TD run by Brandon Perrine in the third quarter. That gave the Knights a 21-20 lead late in the third period.
Corry answered with a 60-yard scoring drive, capped by a 1-yard run by quarterback Scottie Frisina and Frisina's PAT that gave the Beavers their last lead in the see-saw battle.
Bittner finished the season with 83 catches for 1,127 yards and 16 touchdowns -- all school records.
His 102 career catches and 19 receiving TDs are also school records. His career 1,377 receiving yards are No. 2 on Franklin's all-time list, behind only Nate Byham's 1,544 in 2004 and 2005.
Wested completed 13 of 25 passes for 124 yards, giving him 1,897 yards passing on the season. After being picked off nine times in the last two games, Wested didn't throw an interception against the Beavers.
Both teams scored on their first possessions. After Cogwell's 41-yard run and Brian Greenlee's kick made it 7-0, Corry with a 29-yard pass from Frisina's 29-yard pass to Aaron Gluvna to tie the game.
The Knights regained the lead midway through the second quarter on Cogswell's second TD and another Greenlee kic, but again Corry answered, this time on a 20-yard pass to Jordan Mosher.
Dylan Renfrew recovered a fumble on the second-half kickoff, but the Knights couldn't capialized, and the Beavers took their first lead on a 2-yard run by Cory Hushar, making it 20-14.
Steven Myers made 16 tackles, including nine solos, for 36 defensiive points. The sophomore was third on the team in defensive points with 162, trailing only senior lineman Jarred Frawley (186) and Cogswell (180), who missed one game.

Deonte Flemings intercepted four passes, returning one for a touchdown, as powerful Strong Vincent rolled past the Knights, 56-14.
The state-ranked Colonels scored early and often against the Knights, putting the mercy rule into effect when they scored with four seconds left in the half to take a 42-6 lead.

pass plays, the first covering 21 yards off the halfback option from Sean Cogswell after Vincent had taken a 28-0 lead, and the second from a yard out from Julian Wested against the Vincent reserves. That was after the Colonels had taken a 56-6 lead.
Bittner finished the game with eight catches for 66 yards, bringing his season total to 72 catches for 1,020 yards and 15 TDs -- extending his school records in all three categories.
He also broke Nate Byham's school records for career catches and TD receptions. Bittner now has 91 catches and 18 TD receptions in his career. Byham had 86 catches and 17 TD receptions in his two seasons at tight end in 2004 and 2005.
But the Colonels, who passed for only 4 yards (and a touchdown) amassed 372 rushing yards led by Marquis Knights with 154 on 16 carries and Jesse Wattle, both season-highs.
The Knights rushed for just 49 yards on 22 attempts, and Wested threw five interceptions. The Knights finished with a season-low 161 yards total offense.
Wattle scored three touchdowns, all in the first half, the first on a 32-yard run less than a minute into the game to give the Colonels a 6-0 lead. Irfin Ozegovic then kicked the first of eight straight extra points to make it 7-0.
The Knights moved smartly down the field, mostly on the ground, on their first possession, but the drive end when Flemings returned his first interception for a 58-yard touchdown.
He had two more picks in the first half, both of which set up TDs.
The third quarter was scoreless, although the Colonels moved deep into Franklin territory where Cody Waagner recovered a fumble to end the threat.
But Flemings picked off his fourth pass to set up the Colonels' seventh touchdown before sophomore Emmnauel Wells returned another INT 22 yards for Vincent's final score.
The Knights then scored against Vincent’s reserves. The march included a 19-yard run by Brandon Perrine, gains of 17 and 9 yards by Cogswell and two runs netting 11 yards by Zach Murray before Wested threw the TD to Bittner.
Bittner also is closing in on Byham's school record of 1,544 career receiving yards. Bittner has 1,322.

Oct. 19 -- Center 41, Knights 7
Senior Night was not an especially happy one for the Knights, who dropped a 41-7 decision to Center in their home finale.
The Knights committed five turnovers, and were held to a season-low 91 yards passing by the Trojans, a WPIAL Class AA team located in Monaca, Beaver County.
Center, a three-TD favorite by the Born Power Index,
put the "mercy rule" into effect when Zack Spearing scored on a 20-yard run with 29 seconds left in the third quarter to take a 35-0 lead.
The Trojans led 14-0 at the half before exploding for three touchdowns in the third quarter.
The Knights' only score came on a 5-yard pass from Sean Cogswell to Tyler Bittner with 4:34 left in the game.
Bittner extended his single-season school records to 64 catches for 954 yards and 13 TDs, but was held to three receptions for 41 yards, including one catch in the time it took the Trojans to build the 35-0 lead. Bittner, double-teamed all game, drew three pass interference calls.
Quarterback Julian Wested, meanwhile, was held to a season-low 86 yards passing. He completed 5 of 22 throws with the four picks.
Wested's first INT was returned 32 yards for a touchdowns by Chris Kimbrough to give Center a 7-0 lead in the first quarter.
The Trojans never looked back, although, trailing 14-0, the Knights had a chance to score late in the first half , but were stopped on downs on the 14 with 49 seconds left.
Sophomore Steven Myers saved a Center TD when he recovered a fumble at the 8 earlier in the quarter, but two plays later, the Knights fumbled the ball back to the Trojans, setting up their second TD, a 25-yard pass from sophpomore quarterback Preston Dawson to Damon Cotton.
The two connected for a 19-yard TD in the third quarter after the Knights went three-and-out to start the half.
Interceptions by Matt LaValle and Adam DelRusso led to the Trojans' next to TDs, both runs by Spearing, that made it 35-0.
Reserve running back Josh Garrett's 55-yard run set up Center's final TD. Garrett led all rushers with 59 yards on two carries.
Cogswell led the Knights with 41 yards on 10 carries. The Knights were limited to a season-low 186 yards total offense.
Sophomore Steven Myers led the Knights with 39 defensive points, including five solos, five initial hits, six assists and a tackle for loss. He forced and recovered a fumble.

Oct. 12 -- Knights 33, East 12
By ED BRANNON
The News-Herald
Tyler Bittner enjoyed another stellar night catching the football Friday night at Veterans Memorial Stadium against
the Erie East Warriors. But Bittner's biggest contribution in the Knights' 33-12 non-region victory came on the first play of the second half when he recovered a fumble on an onside kick.
"That play really seemed to get us going after we played a pretty lackluster first half," Franklin coach Dave Smith said. "We told the kids at halftime that we were going for the onside kick to start the third quarter and we were prepared defensively if we didn't recover the kick."
Fortunately, for the Knights, Bittner pounced on the loose ball and the game took a sudden and dramatic turn.
Franklin (3-4) proceeded to score three third-quarter touchdowns to break open a tight game. Bittner also had a hand during that spurt, hauling in touchdown catches of 7 and 3 yards, giving the junior 12 TDs for the season, a school record.
Bittner finished with 14 catches, tying the single-game
record he set two weeks ago against Oil City, and his 172 receiving yards pushed his season total to 913, breaking the single-season record of 881 set by Nate Byham in 2004.
Bittner wasn't the only Knight to play big on the turf at Erie, so did quarterback Julian Wested and running back Sean Cogswell.
Wested completed 19 of 26 passes for 252 yards and two TDs and Cogswell rushed 18 times for a career-high 124 yards with a TD.
Wested now has 17 TD passes this seaon, which is second all-time to Patrick Kahle's 19 in 2004.
Franklin's third-quarter explosion helped atone for a lackluster first half in which the Warriors (0-7) made things interesting with an impressive second-quarter scoring drive.
Franklin grabbed a 7-0 lead with 47 seconds left in the first quarter on a 1-yard plunge by Wested and, after Cody Waagner pounced on an East fumble on the ensuing kickoff, Wested scored again from a yard out following a 23-yard pass to Bittner.
With 11:15 left in the half and trailing 14-0, the Warriors began a drive from their own 15 and when it ended, the momentum had clearly shifted sides.
East converted two third-and-long plays and another fourth-and-11 during its 19-play drive, which ate up 10:31. The march ended when quarterback Derrick Allen hit Dajour Stewart with an 8-yard TD pass with 44 seconds left before intermission. The two-point conversion failed, but the Warriors went to the lockerroom trailing by only one score, 14-6.
It was during halftime that Smith and his staff made the decision to roll the dice and open the third quarter with an onside kick.
And when Bittner recovered the loose ball, the Knights never looked back.
Cogswell promptly ran for 31 yards and Wested hooked up with tight end Steve Spieker for an 11-yard gain. Following a short gain by Cogswell, Wested then found Bittner from seven yards out for a score to put the Knights on top, 20-6.
Franklin's defense stepped up in the second half as well, forcing the Warriors to punt on their opening series of the second half.
Again, the Knights marched to paydirt as Cogswell capped an eight-play drive by scoring from a yard out. He also had a 21-yard romp on the 84-yard march and Bittner had catches for 32 and 23 yards.
Cogswell then came up big defensively on East's next series, stuffing Melquwan Carson for no gain on a fourth-and-1 from the East 29.
A 13-yard pass from Wested to Bittner and a 13-yard run by Cogswell preceded Franklin's final touchdown, a 3-yard pass from Wested to Bittner.
The Warriors' final score came against Franklin's reserves in the closing seconds of the game when Allen fired a 16-yard pass to Michael Mathis.
"Ever since I've been here, Franklin's always been a tough and gritty team and they showed that again (tonight)," said Troop, now in his fourth season at East. "They seem to always have a great passing game and they mix in enough running plays to keep you really off-balance defensively."
Franklin's offensive balance was evident by the final statistics as the Knights rushed for 193 yards and threw for 252.
"We needed a win and the kids came up here with the right midset," Smith said. "I thought Cogswell really stepped up and played a great game. And Tyler and Julian just continue to play solid.
"We've got to keep plugging away and continue to get better," he added. "We've got a tough game against Center on Friday in our last home game. We'll need another strong effort like we got (tonight)."
Cogswell and Steven Myers each had 12 tackles. Jarred Frawley had eight stops and two tackles for loss.

Oct. 5 -- Warren 52, Knights 32
The school records continued to fall for junior wide receiver Tyler Bittner, but so did the Knights' record.
In a game that produced 909 yards total offense -including more than 300 yards passing by each team -- Warren outlasted the Knights, 52-32, handing them thier fourth loss in six starts.
The Knights rallied from a 31-7 second-quarter deficit to take a 32-31 lead with 2:41 to play in the third period, but the Dragons capitalized on three fourth-quarter fumbles to pull out the victory.
Jeff Eaton, who was held to 18 yards passing in a four-for-18. four-INT performance during a 65-3 loss to Strong Vincent last week, came back with a vengeance against the Knights.
Despite being without start receiver Cole Boje, the senior completed 22 of 31 passes for 337 yards and four touchdowns. He also scored two TDs -- one on a 73-yard run -- to finish with 428 yards total offense.
Meanwhile, junior QB Julian Wested completed 16 of 31 passes for a career-high 303 yards and four touchdowns for the Knights.
Three of his scoring passes went to Bittner, who
broke Nate Byham's school record for TD receptions in a season with 10. Byham held the old mark with nine.
Bittner caught 27- and 33-yard TD passes to cut Warren's halftime lead to 31-20 and then on the third play of the second half pulled in a 62-yarder to make it 31-26. An interception by Brandon Sires set up Bittner's second TD.
The Knights went ahead 32-31 on Brandon Perrine's 34-yard TD, but the lead was short-lived.
The Dragons regained the lead on Eaton's 24-yard pass to freshman Matt Stapleford, and then extended their lead as fumbles set up two more touchdowns.
Bittner finished the game with nine catches for 214 yards. He now has 47 receptions on the season, breaking Mark Kennedy's school record 46 set in 1987.
Bittner now has 13 career TD receptions, which ties him with Lou Fogle for second on Franklin's all-time list. Byham is No. 1 with 17.
Wested is getting close to Byham's single-season record for receiving yards. He had 883 in 2004. Bittner now has 741.
Other numbers:
Wested's 303 yards passing is the third ever by a Franklin player, ranking behind only Patrick Kahle's 327 yards against Meadville and Kahle's 319 against Corry, both in 2004. Franklin's previous high against Warren was 272 yards by Ted Marchibroda in 1947. His other TD pass went to Junior TE Steve Spieker. It covered 24 yards and tied the game in the opening quarter.
Sharpsville's 397 yards passing in 1966 is the most ever against the Knights. Warren's total tied Cathedral Prep (2005) for second place. Junior Mitch McTavish led the Dragons with 11 catches for 177 yards, and Stapleford had five receptions for 93. McTavish caught a 29-yard pass on fourth-and-10 for Warren's next-to-last TD.
Warren's 552 yards total offense is No. 3 all-time against the Knights and the eighth 500-yard game against them. (Strong Vincent leads with five.)
The Knights had 340 of their 357 yards total offense in the first three quarters. The Dragons outrushed the Knights, 215-54, with junior Cotie Snyder leading the way with 96 yards on 13 carries.
Sophomore Colton Johnson kicked a 41-yard field goal for Warren. It's the longest in Region 5 this season, and was his third of the season.
Wested has 15 TDs passes -- completing 86 of 169 throws for 1,344 yards with six INTs -- and is approaching Kahle's 2004 school mark of 19 TD passes in a season. Kahle threw for 2,328 yards that year.
The Dragons posted their first 50-point game against the Knights since 1915 when they romped, 104-0.
Sires, a sophomore linebacker up from the jayvees, had 21 defrensive points, second only to Jarred Frawley, who totaled 24. Frawley two sacks and two and a half tackles for loss.

Sept. 28 -- Knights 27, Oil City 21
Tyler Bittner scored three touchdowns and set
two school receiving records as the Knights held off Oil City, 27-21.
Julian Wested completed 19 of 32 passes for 295 yards, including scoring strikes of 30, 3 and 45 yards as the Knights built a 20-0 lead after their first possession in the second half.
The Knights' first TD came early in the second quarter, and bthe second came on a fourth-down play with 28.5 seconds left in the half.
After the winless Oilers scored their first touchdown, a 59-yard run by Brandon Perrine gave the Knights a 27-6 lead with 5:16 to play in the third quarter.
The Oilers then scored two straight touchdowns
to close the gap to 27-21 with 6:58 to play before recovering an onsides kick.
But Wested broke up a pass that looked like a sure touchdown. The Oilers had one more chance after a fumble recovery but the Knights held.
Bittner caught 14 passes for 216 yards, both school marks. He shared the old receptions record of 13 with Mike Bell, who held the old yardage record with 196 against Titusville in 2002.
Bittner had 11 catches for 162 yards by halftime.
Wested's passing yardage ranks third all-time in
FHS history, and was the most ever by a Knight against the Oilers.
Perrine had an interception and Steve Spieker recovered a fumble for the Knights.
Perrine and Jarred Frawley each totaled 32 defensive points, Frawley with 12 tackles and Perrine with 11.5. Frawley also registered a sack and tackle for loss and batted down a pass.
Ryan Malachina also was in on 11.5 tackles.

Sept. 21 -- Slippery Rock 23, Knights 12
Five dropped passes and three turnovers did in the Knights in a 23-12 loss to Slippery Rock that possibly ended their playoff hopes.
Nursing a 12-10 lead, the Knights -- led by Shown
Johns -- made a goal-line stand late in the third quarter, only to fumble the ball back to Slippery Rock four plays later. Johns registered a sack and a key initial hit during the stand.
The Rockets then drove for the go-ahead score, and later sealed the deal with 1:12 to play with another touchdown. In between time the Knights' drive stalled thanks to several dropped passes.
The Rock took a 3-0 lead on a 28-yard field goal by Josh Powell in the opening quarter. The Knights answered with a 13-yard run by Sean
Cogswell, who ran for 34 yards on five carries during the drive.
Cogswell finished with 70 yards rushing on 18 carries, and also caught two passes for 28 yards.
Slippery Rock reclaimed the lead in the second quarter on a 14-yard run by junior quarterback Jonathan Powell, who led all rushers with 100 yards on 16 carries.
But Julian Wested's 23-yard pass to Matt Basham gave the Knights the lead at the half.
Wested completed 10 of 23 passes for 187 yards. Basham (70 yards) and Brandon Perrine (74) each caught three passes.
Sophomore Steven Myers was invovled in 13 tackles, eight solo. Johns had five solo tackles.

Sept. 14 -- Meadville 32, Knights 13
Tyler Bittner tied a school record with 13 receptions, but it wasn't enough as Meadville posted a 32-13 decision for its first win over the Knights since 1997.
Bittner matched a record set by Mike Bell who
caught 13 passes for 196 yards against Titusville in 2002. Bittner's 177 yards receiving is second to Bell on Franklin's all-time list.
His 17-yard catch from Julian Wested gave the Knights a 7-0 lead, but it was short-lived.
Meadville responded with 32 straight points for its second straight win after snapping a 15-game losing streak last week against Warren.
Wested completed 16 of 33 passes for 224 yards and two touchdowns -- the other going to Bittner for 9 yards in the fourth quarter. He also completed a 21-yard fourth down pass to tight end Steve Spieker in the first scoring drive.
The total yardage was close -- 355-328-- but the Bulldogs racked up 302 on the ground as all three running backs gained at least 70 yards. Fullback Mike Prsytaloski led the way with 84 yards on 20 carries.
The Bulldogs put together scoring drives of 87, 79 and 85 yards -- the later consuming almost 12 minutes in the third quarter after the Knights were stopped on downs at the 15.
A 35-yard interception return to midfield by Tony Phillips led to a TD that gave Mradville a 20-7 halftime lead.
The Knights were without Ethan Hunt, who was injured in last week's game. Brandon Perrine played, but is nursing a toe injury. Robert Tantlinger, who suffered a knee injury in the opener against Central, is out for the season.

Sept. 7 -- Titusville 42, Knights 18
Derek Carr scored four touchdowns in the first half before Jon Proano put the "mercy rule" into effect with
an 83-yard kickoff return to stat the second half, and Titusville rolled to a 42-18 victory over the Knights in the Region 5 opener for both teams
Carr scored on a 13-yard pass from Andrew Clark after the Knights fumbled the ball away on their first offensive play.
The senior added runs of 6-, 33- and 29-yard scoring dashes to help stake the Rockets (2-0) to a 27-0 halftime lead. Carr finished with 168 yards rushing on 16 carries.
Proano's kickoff return made it 35-0 14 seconds into the second half.
Proano would add another TD in the midst of a three-TD second half for the Knights.
Junior quarterback Julian Wested flipped three scoring passes -- two to junior wide receiver Tyler Bittner covering 15 and 17 yards and the other to senior Matt Basham for nine yards -- before it was over.
Wested threw for a career-high 207 yards, completing 14 of 19 passes, but the Rockets limited the Knights to 22 yards rushing.
Bittner caught five passes for 76 yards. Basham matched him with five catches for 64. Junior running back Brandon Perrine added four recpetions for 67 yards, including a 61-yarder in the fourth.
Wested was 11-for-17 for 179 yards in the second half.
The Knights (1-1) were without Robert Tantlinger, who injured a knee in the opener against Central Tech, and suffered a few more injuries against the Rockets.

Sept. 1 -- Knights 35, Central Tech 18
Brandon Perrine rushed for 203 yards and two touchdowns -- one on an 85-yard run -- in the Knights' 35-18 of Central Tech in their opener.
The Knights scored the first three touchdowns of the game for a 21-0 lead two minutes into the second quarter.
It was 21-12 at halftime after two TDs by Tech's Maleek
Toran in the last 3:48 of the half. The second one covered 66 yards with 23 seconds left.
But the Knights scored two more TDs in the second half to go up 35-12 before the Centaurs scored their finals touchdown with 40 seconds left.
Junior quarterback Julian Wested, making his first varsity start, threw two TD passes, one for 19 yards to Robert Tantlinger and the other for 9 yards to Thomas Hearst.
Wested completed 11 of 21 passes for 128 yards, and was intercepted twice. He also scored on a 3-yard run in the third quarter.
Perrine scored on a 1-yard run midway through the fourth.
His 85-yard run matched the second-longest in Franklin history. The longest was 86 yards by Bill McCullough against Union Area in 1954. Bus Watkins (Sharpsville, 1930) and Bill Donohue (Clintonville, 1931) also scored on 85-yard runs.
Tantlinger left the game in the opening quarter with a knee injury. He caught four passes for 57 yards and rushed five times for 23 yards before he was injured.
Ryan Malachina had an interception and a fumble recovery for the Knights. Sean Cogswell also had an interception, and Jarred Frawley recovered a fumble.
