Marchibroda, Lawrence will be honored with special celebration

Ted Marchibroda and Rolland “Bay” Lawrence made area football fans proud in the mid-1970s.

At 6 p.m. Oct. 12, area fans will be given the chance to show their appreciation when the football greats will be honored by having their Franklin High School jerseys retired in a special celebration at Bandstand Park.
Marchibroda's No. 23 and Lawrence's No. 21 will become the third and fourth jerseys to be retired, joining the No. 22 worn by Paul “Red” Law and the No. 20 of Nate Byham, who is  a freshman at Pitt.

Franklin football coach Dave Smith will give the opening remarks and the purpose for bringing Franklin's two “living legends” together.

He'll be followed to the podium by Law, whose bruising running in the mid-1960s earned him the distinction of being the first Knight to have his jersey retired. A knee injury during his freshman season at Arizona State cut Law's football career short, but his impact on Franklin football was unquestioned.

Lawrence and others followed in Law's footsteps and the Knights went on the school's best 10-year run in school history. From 1966 through 1975, Franklin went 72-14-4.

Smith was hoping that Byham could also be on hand, but the Pitt tight end will be in Florida for the Oct. 13 game against Central Florida.

Byham broke numerous Franklin receiving records and was picked to play in the U.S. Army All-American Bowl in San Antonio, Texas, and the Big 33 Classic in Hershey. He was also a first-team selection on the Associated Press Class AAA all-state team as a senior.

But, long before Byham and Law, there was Marchibroda.

The man known as “Butch” was a dazzling high school athlete and Franklin compiled a 16-9-2 record during his three years as quarterback before graduating in 1949.
He attended St. Bonaventure for two seasons before the school dropped football and he transferred to the University of Detroit. While there, his stock rose.
Marchibroda led the nation in total offense in 1952 and was named the Most Valuable Player of the 1952 Blue-Gray game in Montgomery, Ala.

He was a first-round pick of the Pittsburgh Steelers in 1953 and played there for three seasons, sandwiched around a two-year stint in the Army. He finished his career by playing two seasons with the Chicago Cardinals.
But, it was his post-playing career where Marchibroda made his mark.

He served as an assistant coach for 15 years with the Washington Redskins and Los Angeles Rams before getting a shot as head coach with the Baltimore Colts.

He promptly turned the Colts into a division champ, going 10-4 and earning the NFL's Coach of the Year award in 1975.

Marchibroda served as offensive coordinator for the Buffalo Bills from 1987-91 and later was head coach of the Indianapolis Colts and Baltimore Ravens. In his 12-year head coaching career, Marchibroda's teams went 87-98-2, won three division titles and made four playoff appearances.

He is still active in the NFL where he has served the past six years as a color analyst for the Colts' radio station, WFBQ 94.7 FM.
Lawrence also dazzled football fans in high school as he led the Knights to a 14-3-1 record in two seasons at quarterback.
The 1969 FHS grad matriculated to tiny Tabor College in Hillsboro, Kan., where his legend continued to grow.

Lawrence established numerous offensive records and he still holds several records some 30 years later. He was a charter member into the school's Hall of Fame in 1999 and his No. 3 jersey was the first one retired by the school in 2003.

After signing as a free agent with the Atlanta Falcons in 1973, Lawrence excelled on special teams and eventually moved into a starting spot at cornerback.

Despite being undersized, Lawrence played big and he led the Falcons in interceptions for five straight seasons from 1975-79.
He was named All-Pro in 1974 when he had seven interceptions, then added nine more picks in 1975. He was also named to the Pro Bowl in 1977.

Lawrence, who was named a starting cornerback on the Falcons' 25th Anniversary Team in 1990, remains the franchise's all-time interception leader with 39.

Lawrence has worked for nearly 20 years at VisionQuest and has been the basketball coach for the past 14 years.

Another former FHS great, Lou Fogle, is scheduled to present Marchibroda. Fogle played four seasons at Clemson and had a Hall of Fame career as a high school football coach at Ashville, N.C.

Lawrence will be presented by classmate and former Knight teammate Steve Grace.

Following the presentation, the public is invited to the second floor of the Franklin Elks Club for autographs and a question and answer session. In case of bad weather, the jersey retirement ceremony will also be moved to the second floor of the Franklin Elks Club.

The Franklin Black Knight Band, under the direction of Steve Johnston, is scheduled to appear at the festivities as well.

Marchibroda and Lawrence are also scheduled to lead Franklin's football team onto the field for Friday's Homecoming Game at 7 p.m. against Erie East. All former Franklin football players are invited to join the FHS band to form a tunnel as Marchibroda and Lawrence lead the team onto the field.
