Matt LaVerde, an assistant coach at Franklin for six of the last seven seasons, on Jan. 28 was named head football coach at Oil City High School.
LaVerde succeeds Bill Heber, who resigned at the end of the season. He beat out six other local, regional and out-of-state applicants for the job.
A math teacher in the Valley Grove School District, LaVerde has served as offensive coordinator for the Knights since 2005. He was defensive coordinator in 2001, 2002 and 2004.
He spent the 2003 season as an assistant coach at Washington and Jefferson College.
LaVerde is a 1996 Oil City graduate and was a standout quarterback for the Oilers in 1994-95.
He was a preferred walk-on at Penn State, but finished his collegiate football career at perennial NCAA Division III power Mt. Union, and was an all-conference middle linebacker in 2000 for the Purple Raiders' fifth national championship team.
