Franklin High School senior Matt Cirell signed a letter-of-intent Feb. 6 to attend Mercyhurst College this fall.
The 6-3, 300-pound Cirell was a first-team Region 5 defensive lineman for the Knights this past season and a second-team offensive lineman.
"Matt had a great high school career for
us," Franklin coach Dave Smith said. "He started as a freshman and was one of our top linemen for the past four years. We'll miss him, but I'm sure he'll work hard and have a good collegiate career."
Cirell, who is planning to major in athletic training, expects to play defensive tackle for the Lakers.
"Mercyhurst's coaches told me they had a hole to fill at defensive tackle and that I'd probably start out there," Cirell said. "I don't really have a preference as to whether I'll play on the offensive or defensive line. I'll play wherever they need me."
Cirell racked up 57 tackles this past season for Franklin.
"My high school experience was great and I love all my coaches," Cirell said. "Coach Smith, coach (Fred) Blackhurst and coach (Bill) Schwabenbauer taught me everything I know. I hope I can take what they've taught me and use it at the next level."
The Lakers, who are coached by Martin Schaetzle, will join the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference's Western Division this season.
