Lou Fogle
After leading the Clesmon Tigers in receiving in 1963, flirted with a career in the pros.
"I went to Canada as a free agent with Montreal and played during the exhibition season but was put on waivers," Fogle wrote in an e-mail. "At the time only a few U.S. citizens could be put on each team.
"Buffalo (of the AFL) picked me up and after two weeks I sustained a knee injury (that) I finally had fixed last year (2002) with a total knee replacement, so that ended my hopes of any professional career."
Fogle went on to enjoy a successful 30-year career as a high school football coach in the Carolinas, posting a 210-107 record.
He received two South Carolina state coach of the year honors. The first was from the Greenville, S.C., News coaches' poll in 1980 when he was coach at Dorman High School in Spartanburg, and the other was from the Associated Press in 1987 when he was coach at Lexinton High School.
Fogle retired as a football coach in 1999 after 14 years in Asheville, N.C., where he coached two future NFL players, linebacker Leonard Little of the St. Louis Rams and running back John Avery of the Miami Dolphins.(Avery, a former No. 1 pick of the Dolphins, played for Edmonton in the CFL in 2002, and led the team in rushing.)
Fogle's last Asheville team was the best in school history, reaching the state finals before losing, and setting a school record for most wins in a season.
He never had a losing season at Asheville, and his teams won seven conference championships.
Fogle is still athletic director at Asheville, and plans to retire next year. "My retirement plans are to spend lots of time back in Franklin getting to see the Knights play in all sports," he said.
"I might add I was blessed to have been coached by so many wonderful coaches from the YMCA, youth baseball and, of course, at FHS. Not a day goes by that I don't have fond memories of wonderful Franklin, Pa."
